Character Name: Hinahoho
Character Canon: Magi : Adventures of Sinbad
History: Wiki Link
AU History: Born as the oldest son of the patriarch of the Imuchakk clan and leader of one of the fishing villages that make up the nation in the distant reaches of Glacier, Hina (as was his name as a child), was a young man caught between his filial responsibilities and the whims of his own heart. All of the members of his family had their eyes on him as he grew up, and he was a well loved role model to his many younger siblings but-- despite the great stature and physical prowess of the Frostlords of his bloodline-- he always had a gentle soul. That, and the fact that his elemental typings didn't have Fighting anywhere in it's combination, made him something of an oddity amongst his kin. While others went and told bawdy tales of their hunts and misadventures, Hina was content to listen and to illustrate the stories he had heard about in simple charcoal lines on weathered parchment that was often damaged or forgotten. As he grew older, he tried and failed time and again to accomplish the time honored family tradition of felling a wild Gyarados with a single blow from his harpoon. Fear would clench his heart, stay his hands, and he could never bring himself to make that blow.
By the time he had turned 21, all of his peers had rightfully earned their 'adult'name-- a fact that brought shame to Hina and, by extension, his family.
Thus, at winter's receeding, Hina set out with only a single harpoon, a tiny boat, his pokemon partner-- a gutsy little Swinub called Rolo-- and the clothes on his back to make a final attempt at surmounting this challenge. After weeks of being in the wilderness, with only his younger sister coming and going to offer supplies and news, Hina finally found himself face to face with the beast.
And his sister in danger.
Forced to make a choice between finally being acknowledged as a man and saving his kin, he chose to use all of his strength to pull his sister out of danger.
Meanwhile, someone else took his shot.
But, with only Hina and the stranger being party to what had actually happened, they were welcomed back to the village with open arms while Hina hid his heavy heart. Though he was honored that day as an adult, he felt that it was an honor that he didn't deserve.
The rumors of trouble brewing in the south gave him an idea, and another option to try again. Once again he packed his bags, and left a small note for his family to let them know what he was doing and that he would return to them again, someday.
And on that day, he knew he would be worthy of the name 'Hinahoho.'
Canon Personality: Despite the frosty climes he was born in, Hinahoho is a gentle, kind hearted soul with a sense of honor and duty that he will not allow to faulter for any trials that he may happen upon. He has a history of being timid and soft spoken due to his own shame of not meeting the tribal standards of the Imuchakk federation-- a race of tundra dwelling, sea faring hunters and warriors with a colorful history of piracy and a strong culture based on honor and familial love. When he was younger, he would often leave the village and go hide in the arctic mountainsides during his darkest moments, but he would always return due to his love of his family. The fact that it took him until he was 21 to attain his Warrior's Name was a source of great shame for him, and there was an extended period of time when he wasn't allowed to return to his homelands until he completed the trial of defeating one of the Rampaging Unicorns that travelled north to spawn every year.
Sinbad's arrival on the scene and stealing his kill was a great source of frustration for him, and it forced him to reach his emotional limit. Taking on the Dungeon Valefor was his final attempt at actually making good on completing his time-honored family traditions...and, though he failed, he ultimately found a new purpose and reason in his life-- following that small young man whose ego and dreams were grander than the life of Imuchakk's ancient chief, Rametoto.
Finding this purpose was what finally allowed to come into his own.
Once he found his resolve to stand by Sinbad's side for reasons that were more than tradition, he also found within him the courage to confess his love to the beautiful and powerful Rurumu-- Chief Rametoto's only daughter-- and his passion to actually enjoy the thrill of the fight. This new sense of understanding and purpose within himself allowed him to extend his gaze upon others with more understanding and empathy. The young Ja'far, a reformed assassin, effectively became Hinahoho and Rurumu's first child among the many that they would both adopt from within the Sindria Trading Company and have biologically before Rurumu's inevitable passing, and his ability to understand the trials of a distraught and powerful warrior were what allowed him to effectively communicate with a young Masrur who had just been released from his enslavement and role as a gladiator that there was indeed a place for him in this world.
His reasons for understanding Masrur's troubles were two-fold; he understood what it was like to hide yourself from those you cared about, and his fatherly intuition allowed him to understand what was needed to be done to draw Masrur out of his shell.
Furthermore, although he is the most well travelled man from Imuchakk in that era, he never once wavers from his pride, his culture's traditions, and his love for his family. During the periods when his beloved Rurumu needed to return to their homelands to safely give birth to their children, and during the times when Hinahoho was tempted by warrior women of Artemyra, he never once flagged in his loyalty to his wife. Even when those same women from Artemyra insinuated that they had engaged in activities of a colorful sort, Hinahoho was adamant in insisting that he never once made a move on them. Although many other men may have jumped at that opportunity, Hinahoho is nothing but loyal to his wife.
Even years after her passing, he never once even hinted that he was looking for another partner.
And, even though he treats Sinbad as something akin to a brother, his loyalty to the man as a king can never be questioned.
AU Deviation: The biggest deviations for Hinahoho's personality between the game and his canon iteration are partly based on the Imuchakk culture itself. Since Imuchakk isn't a 'nation' in the way that it is in canon, but one of the many clans that make up the inhabitants of Glacier, there is less of a sense of isolation from the rest of the world that is evident within the Imuchakk nation in canon. Similarly, Hinahoho's enormous physique and near inhuman physical skills, which set the Imuchakk apart in a manner that's not dissimilar to the Fanalis, can be considered part of the physical traits that are inherited by the Frostlords of that clan.
As such, if he were to go looking for a wife or partner some day, he's not restricted to dating Imuchakk women if he ever wanted to have children in the future-- which is something that he does wish for in canon.
The other major difference is that, while Shini is okay with Hina and Sinbad having had an encounter at some point off screen, Hina's absence from Glacier isn't entirely related to seeing Sinbad as his 'king'. While such a connection may occur over the course of the game, at this point in time they haven't met much more than in passing. Similarly, there isn't a good means of having an analogue to his relationship with Rurumu, so I've chosen to leave that open-ended so something can organically build from it.
In effect, Hinahoho in Brave New World will be more akin to how he was when he set out for Valefor's dungeon on his own, rather than when he set sail on the seas.
Finally, just for clarification, the Rampaging Unicorn that he had to face (and had Sinbad steal his kill) in canon has been replaced with a Gyarados. It seemed the most fitting.
Canon Abilities: Hinahoho's abilities can be divided into three notable subsets: Mental, Physical, and powers related to his Household Vessel.
In terms of mental abilities, Hinahoho has a wide and varied education that includes smatterings of the classics, business, and a love of the arts as well as a warrior's education of fighting and handling himself at sea. Hinahoho is smart enough and adaptable enough to survive for weeks at sea with minimal provisions, and he has a native's understanding of the trials that exist within the tundra. He also is excellent at understanding the people around him, both due to his own experiences of dealing with his own shame and depression, the strong focus on interpersonal relations-- particularly those relating to family-- and something that he later comes to call a 'father's intuition.' His ability to empathize with others without showing pity allows him to befriend wide variety of people and accept the world around him as it is without angsting over it.
The physical skills are more related to the various racial traits of the Imuchakk tribes. Hinahoho, like all Imuchakk, is granted with an overly large and strong physique with a tolerance for extremely cold climates and the ability to hold his breath for upwards toward an hour. His immense strength-- enough to hurl around the horn of the Rampaging Unicorn as his primary weapon with ease-- and lung capacity make him and the rest of the warriors native to the Imuchakk tribes formiddable underwater combatants. Additionally, the Imuchakk are able to utilize techniques that resemble the Magoi Manipulation that is mentioned in the main Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic series, although the Imuchakk are noted to not be able to teach these skills to others. Magoi Manipulation is closely related to the various Ki techniques seen in a variety of shonen anime, and the Imuchakk use these skills as a means of better handling themselves in the water or channelling large amounts of it into their traditional harpoons in a move that is often called 'First Harpoon'. While this skill can be used much more quickly without the aid of a weapon to channel it into, it's also noted to not be nearly as accurate in both it's aim and strength. Hinahoho has only used the unarmed version of this technique once in canon, and that was in a spar against the young Fanalis gladiator, Masrur.
Any other skills that Hinahoho may have are related to his Household Vessel, Galfor Rolomus. Much of the information relating to his Household Vessel remains unknown at this point in time, but readers have enough information to understand that it's a spirit associated with the frozen Djinn of Falsehood and Prestige, Valefor. From what we have seen thus far, Galfor Rolomus uses Hinahoho's harpoon as a conduit to thrust itself at the enemy.
Any other abilities associated with Galfor Rolomus are traits that we can infer from Valefor, and primarily consists of control over ice and extremely cold temperatures-- fitting, for a man who hails from the tundra. It's doubtful that Valefor's Stagnation ability-- that is, a skill that allows him to freeze the movement of individual water molecules to the point where it seems like a person is stopped in time-- extends to members of his Household.
Enlightened Abilities: Hina's primary Enlightened typings will be Ice and Water, and his trait will be Mastery of Battle.
The combination of these two elemental traits will account for Hina's endurance to the tundra climates surrounding Glacier and his ability to fight for extended periods of time under water. Though canon states that he can hold his breath for upwards to an hour, that length of time will need to be built up to as he grows stronger and evolves with time-- although any traits he may pick up will be more akin to that of aquatic or arctic mammals, such as lungs that are designed to withstand such pressures at great depths, a denser, thicker sort of hair, and perhaps wolf-like ears as a nod to his association with Valefor in canon.
Additionally, he will end up accumulating some Fighting and Normal typed physical moves, but he will have a trait akin to Refrigerate to make Normal typed moves analogous to Ice typed ones. Unfortunately this comes with the two fold problem of 1) him having a distinct weakness against Fighting Types, which he will take great pleasure in trying to surmount, and 2) exceedingly little tolerance for the heat.
When a person is comfortable enough to go shirtless in the tundra, he is going to have problems in other climates.
Any traits related to his skill with Magoi Manipulation will be channelled through primarily Ice-typed and potentially a few Fighting-typed moves, as will be outlined below.
In his Initial stage, Hinahoho will be much like he is when he first appears in canon. His stature is as great as it always has been, as is his physical strength and endurance to cold. Base skills of his include the innocuous Lock-on, Icicle Spear, in which he coats his harpoon with ice before launching it at a foe, the Normal-typed Rapid Spin, and the Water-typed moves Aqua Jet and Soak.
The Second stage brings with it the Fighting-typed move Quick Guard and the Normal-typed move Hold Back, because protecting allies is a strong priority with him. Additionaly, he will learn to channel the Ice-typed moves Aurora Beam and Ice Fang through his harpoon, and the Water-typed move Brine.
His Third stage will bring about the Water-typed move Dive-- whch he will use frequently outside of battle, because of his love of swimming. He will additionally learn the Ice-typed move, Freeze-Dry, the Fighting-typed move Aura Sphere, the Normal-typed move Slam, and, finally, the Ice-typed move Ice Beam.
I would also like to request a Steel-typed Harpoon for him to bring along with him to Union. It has no special traits-- it's just a really sturdy weapon.
Starter Pokémon: A peppy Swinub, called Rolo.
Notes/Special Considerations: There is a tidbit of information that I'm not sure where to add, or if to include it as a Holiday Request after Hinahoho is accepted, but there is a ceremony amongst the Imuchakk tribes called the Maharagan-- a festival that serves a two-fold purpose of honoring a young warrior or hunter for their first kill by granting them their Warrior's Name, and honors the fallen beast itself for providing food and the raw materials for fuel, tools, armor, etc to benefit the entire tribe. Not a piece of the Rampaging Unicorn goes to waste by the tribe-- and I figure a Gyarados that is hunted down for the same purpose would receive the same treatment.
